Mersea Island off the Essex coast is reached by crossing a causeway from the mainland. The minute you step over this mystical threshold you are transported to a world of salt air, beautiful beaches, sailing, oysters and art. The natural beauty of the Island has attracted numerous artists over the years, and many of them have been drawn to make their homes here.
Island Artists was established in late 2014, in order to bring Mersea Island artists together for mutual support, and to show work as a group. The artists open their studios to the public to share and exhibit original art and fine crafts work within their unique and the wider community. They engage and inform others of a variety of art forms that can be commissioned and purchased through individual artists and local galleries. The first Mersea Open Studios was in the May of 2015, and has gone from strength to strength since then.
The Island Artists open studios attracts hundreds of visitors during the week end when the artists open their studios to the public. The artists live & work on Mersea Island & exhibit together regularly throughout the year, on and off Mersea. The annual open studios weekend is launched with a group show at Mersea's very own Art Café. The theme for the 2019 show is ‘Odyssey’. Odyssey is often associated with Homer’s poem ‘The Odyssey’ which related the story of the warrior Odysseus’ epic 10 year journey home from Troy. Odyssey can be interpreted in many ways – literally as an epic journey which may be climbing a mountain, going on a voyage or trip or figuratively which may be a spiritual journey or quest of self-discovery. The artists’ interpretation of Odyssey will be reflected in their exhibits. The ‘Odyssey’ exhibition will be displayed at the Art Café from Thursday 30th May to Tuesday 25th June.
Since its establishment in 2014 the Island Artists has expanded to 15 participants, and the artists will take part in Mersea Open Studios on the Friday 31st May/ Saturday 1st Sunday 2nd June.
