Jean Woods - painter - printmaker - artist books
Jean Woods was born in Oxford and trained at Abingdon College as a Court Writer, Secretary and Book Keeper before “marrying a Mersea boy” and moving to Mersea aged twenty. She then took evening classes in art before studying art more formally at Colchester Institute in 1990 and then undertaking an MA in Bookmaking in 2000.
Her work includes printmaking, design and artists’ books. She has sold work at the RA and Whitechapel Gallery in London and has work in the San Francisco Arts Institute collection in the US. She is also a member of the Totham 10 art group who will be holding a group show at the Mersea Museum this October.
Jean described her work: “It’s predominantly about the North Essex coastline, about nature. It’s personal and evolving.”
Jean is a poet as well as an artist and her beautiful artists’ books combine words and images to make something individual and evocative. They are interactive, the viewer being able to recreate the poem and the image depending on which pages are turned or lifted. “My works are a breadcrumb trail of ideas for the viewer to follow and enjoy.”
